If DNS is not working, or if the Start of Authority for your domain is not functioning, ALL name-based communication stops cold. E-mail, Web, Windows Active Directory, and other services completely fail if DNS does not function. Thankfully, the DNS system is designed to be fairly fault-tolerant if secondary servers are available when the primary server fails or becomes unreachable.

Often, with other DNS services or the basic services that come with most basic web sites, you may not have complete control over your zone. Often you will not have the ability to add a host name to your domain without extra charge or long frustrating conversations with low level support staff. All hosting customers have complete control over their DNS Zone.
